Terpenes are the aromatic oils the plant produces — the same family of compounds that make pine smell like pine and citrus smell like citrus. They're not unique to cannabis, but cannabis happens to produce dozens at once. They modulate the high.
The 8 terpenes that matter
| Terpene | Smells like | Effect lean | Also found in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myrcene | Earthy, musky, mango | Sedating, "couch lock" | Mango, hops, lemongrass |
| Limonene | Citrus, lemon peel | Uplifting, mood | Citrus rinds |
| Pinene | Pine, fresh forest | Alert, focus, easier breathing | Pine needles, rosemary |
| Linalool | Lavender, floral | Calm, relaxed | Lavender |
| Caryophyllene | Pepper, spice, woody | Anti-inflammatory, calm | Black pepper, cloves |
| Humulene | Hops, earthy | Appetite suppressant, anti-inflammatory | Hops, basil |
| Terpinolene | Sweet, herbal, piney | Balanced; focus + relaxation | Apples, nutmeg |
| Ocimene | Sweet, herbal | Energizing, decongestant | Mint, parsley |
The entourage effect
Cannabinoids + terpenes together produce different effects than either alone. A pure THC isolate gummy hits differently than a full-spectrum flower with the same THC dose, because the flower's terpene mix tunes the experience. Full-spectrum > isolate for most people.
Practical use
- Want sleep? Look for myrcene + linalool dominant.
- Want energy / day use? Look for limonene + pinene + terpinolene.
- Want calm but alert? Caryophyllene + pinene.
