Northern Lights — strain review

Northern Lights is one of the oldest and best-known indica strains in cannabis history. Bred in the Pacific Northwest in the 1980s and stable for 40+ years, it's the strain most experienced users name when asked for a reference indica. Heavy myrcene + linalool, deep body soak, classic sleep profile. Here's what to expect from our current batch and how to dose it.

Strain profile

Strain bucket: Indica (about 95% indica genetics — one of the purest commercial indicas) Lineage: Afghani × Thai (the original 1985 cross) Dominant terpene: Myrcene (typically 0.6-0.9% of total weight) with linalool and caryophyllene as supporting notes Typical THCa range: 22-28% in current commercial flower; our recent batches have tested 24-26% Use time: Night — best 30-60 min before sleep Flavor profile: Pine, sweet, earthy. Some batches show a slight floral edge from the linalool.

Effects — what to expect

Northern Lights produces what most users describe as a deep body soak: muscles release, racing thoughts quiet, eyelids get heavy in 15-30 min from one or two puffs. The effect is more "in the body" than "in the head" — you can still think clearly, you just don't want to.

Peak hits 30-45 min in. Duration is 2-3 hours of pronounced sedation, with a residual relaxed feel for another hour or two.

What it's good for: insomnia, end-of-day stress, muscle tension, chronic pain that's keeping you awake.

What it's NOT good for: anything daytime. Northern Lights at 11am will put you on the couch.

How to dose Northern Lights

For new or low-tolerance users:

  • One small puff of 24%+ flower, wait 15 min. Most people are at the right level after one puff.
  • A second puff if needed, but don't push to a third — Northern Lights is potent and the law of diminishing returns hits hard.

For experienced users:

  • 2-3 puff session 45 min before bed.
  • Pair with a CBN tincture (5mg) for prolonged sleep duration if you tend to wake up at 3am.

Avoid: combining with alcohol (additive sedation), or using close to morning if you have an early commitment — the residual heaviness can make 6am rough.

Who should try Northern Lights

Yes if: you struggle with sleep onset, you want a "classic" indica reference experience, or you've tried other indicas that didn't quite hit the body-relax mark.

Maybe if: you're prone to anxiety — Northern Lights at high doses can produce a slight paranoia in some users (the dose curve is biphasic; stay on the low end).

Skip if: you need to stay alert any time soon, you have an early morning, or you're sensitive to THC heaviness (try our hybrid options first).

Frequently asked questions

Is Northern Lights stronger than other indicas?

Comparable potency to most premium indicas (24-28% THCa range). What sets it apart is the body-soak character vs. just heaviness. Many users find Northern Lights more "useful" than higher-THCa flowers because the effect is consistent and predictable.

How long does Northern Lights last?

Peak 30-45 minutes in, pronounced effects 2-3 hours, residual relaxation another 1-2 hours. Total experience: 3-5 hours from one session.

Will Northern Lights make me anxious?

At low doses, no — most users find it actively calming. At high doses (3+ puffs in a session), the sedation can tip into a heavy "trapped in the body" feeling that some interpret as anxiety. Stay at 1-2 puffs.

How does Northern Lights compare to Granddaddy Purple?

Both are indica, both myrcene-forward, both excellent sleep strains. Granddaddy Purple has a sweeter berry/grape profile vs. Northern Lights' pine/earth notes. Effects are very similar; pick by flavor preference.
